NOVA Featured Runner: Ann Pohlers

By | September 10, 2018

From Coach Jerry: I’ve worked with many, many outstanding runners over the years, but I can’t remember working with a runner that has inspired me quite the way Ann has. Ann is not going to win races, but she is incredibly passionate about being the best runner she can be. Hearing Ann’s excitement at the very realistic prospect of running a PR and breaking 5 hours at Marine Corps has me truly invested in her success, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her reach her goals this fall, and beyond.

1) What are your PRs (5k, 10K, any others?)

5K- 28:16 (2000) I am getting closer to breaking this. 31:12 at our 5K is the closest I have gotten since 2006.
10K- 1:05 (2007) Also getting close, 2017 MCM 10K 1:09
10 MI- 1:48 (2018)

2) What were your goal race(s) for this year? Do you have any upcoming races planned?

Army 10 miler – Hope to beat the PR I set earlier this year or match it.
MCM 10K – Hope to get closer to my PR
Richmond Marathon in Nov and am hoping to match or break my marathon PR from 2001. I have not run a marathon in 13 years so this should be interesting.
Feb 2019 I am running a 50K which should also be interesting as I have not run that distance in 11 years.

I am excited to see the results a year of consistent training w NOVA can produce.

My BIG goal is to run a 50 miler in 2020 when I turn 50, eeekkkkk. Lucky for me I have awesome running buddies who will be out there with me!

3) What do you consider your best race performance to date?
Leesburg 20K 2018- I broke a 12 year old PR by 6 seconds

4) How and when did you find NOVA, and what do you like best about the team?
I had joined another local track club but it just did not have the right vibe for me. So I looked around some more and found the NOVA group. I came from a big but friendly track club in San Diego and even though the NOVA club is on the small side I love the community atmosphere. I am not with the faster runners yet I feel very supported and appreciate it.

5) What’s the best piece of coaching advice you’ve ever received from Coach Jerry?
For the Lawyers 10K I was really unhappy with my time but he said to look at the weather and what I had been able to run last fall with little tack training. When I did that I realized I was able to run almost the same time in terrible humid weather and felt a bit better about my performance.

6) What thoughts do you have on your performance at the Leesburg 20K?
I knew I had beat my time from 2017 which was my goal but when I checked Athlinks to see what my PR was I was stunned. Here I was 12 years older and heavier also yet due to all the training with Coach Jerry I was able to beat that time. Additionally it is a challenging course and the weather was miserable.

7) What non-running fitness related (or other) activities do you enjoy?
I have been going to CrossFit for the last 5 years, it helped me re-discover my love of running as well as become more fit than I have ever been. Always up for a good hike as well, we have so many trails here I love all the variety.
