2019 NOVA Running Club Selected Individual Awards

By | January 16, 2020

Congratulations to the 2019 NOVA Running Club Individual Award Winners: Robbie Brusso, Lindsey Swansen, Brandon Ueki and Alex Markenzon . NOVA Coach Jerry Alexander provides his breakdown of the four award winners below.

NOVA Running Club 2019
Men’s MVP - Robbie Brusso
Robbie ran PRs at virtually every distance in 2019. While Robbie's PRs of 61:27 for 10 miles and 1:21:35 for the half marathon are impressive, the clear highlight of his year was his marathon PR of 2:58:12 at Indianapolis. Robbie had been on the cusp of breaking 3 hours for several years, and despite his best efforts, he had been unable to get over the hump. It all came together for Robbie in Indy, and his years of consistent hard work paid off in a major way. Now that he's broken through the 3 hour barrier, Robbie will set his sights higher in 2020.

NOVA Running Club 2019
Women’s MVP - Lindsey Swansen
Lindsey ran a huge marathon PR of 3:18:08 in 2017, and after a maternity break in 2018, she made a fantastic return to competition in 2019. After running Boston in the spring, Lindsey set an ambitious goal of running another big PR of 3:15 at the Richmond marathon this fall. Not only did Lindsey meet that goal, she exceeded it by running an outstanding 3:12:30. She also set PRs in the 5K, 10K, 10 Mile, and half marathon this year. Lindsey's continued improvement has been inspirational, and she's going to keep the PR train rolling in 2020.

NOVA Running Club 2019
Coach’s Award - Brandon Ueki
Brandon is not receiving this award because of his tragic death this past November. Rather, he earned this award with his outstanding performances in 2019, most notably his 58:39 at GW Parkway 10 Mile and his remarkable 2:50:29 at Grandma's Marathon, which was a PR of over 10 minutes, and because of his contagious enthusiasm at practice week after week. Brandon truly loved being part of NOVA, and we will never forget his passion for running in general, and for NOVA in particular. Brandon made an indelible impression on everyone he met in the club, and we will always cherish his memory.

NOVA Running Club 2019
Rookie of the Year - Alex Markenzon

The Rookie of the Year Award is reserved for someone new to NOVA, new to running, or both. While Alex has been running a few years, he burst onto the scene as a new member to NOVA in a big way, running numerous PRs, highlighted by his 1:29:57 half marathon (which he later bested by running 1:29:22 DURING the first half of the Marine Corps Marathon), and 3:09:26 at Marine Corps in atrocious conditions. Alex has been a constant presence at practice and at tempos, and with his continued hard work and dedication, he will run many more big PRs in the months and years to come.
